A Sunday In Amsterdam

Sunday was the perfect Indian Summer day. As last week was pretty cold and we had to turn on the heating again, I pulled all my chunky warm sweaters out of the closet. I’m the kind of person that is always cold so I love to dress up as warm as I can. Yesterday however, the sun came out and the temperature was suddenly hitting the 18 degrees. It was the perfect weather for a long walk outside so we decided to take the train to Amsterdam and walk along the canals. The trees along the canals are slowly changing colours and you can already spot some beautiful tints of yellow, orange, brown and even red.

The light was gorgeous, the sun at a low angle creating these beautiful long shadows. I love to walk down these narrow streets full with parked bikes. It is this time of the year that Amsterdam is looking it’s prettiest. number-27urban-garden

Urban gardens are found on almost every corner and I always have to stop and look at them. egelantiersgrachtcat-egelantiersgracht

The Egelantiersgracht and Bloemgracht are two of my favourite canals in Amsterdam. They are smaller than the big ones, less touristy and so pretty. Spotted this cat at the Egelangtiersgracht enjoying himself while observing the life around him.life-on-the-canalsmonks-coffee-roasters

We walked all the way to Amsterdam West where we stumbled upon a fairly new coffee spot called Monks Coffee Roasters. We drank a cappuccino, shared a piece of caramel shortbread and flipped through some books that were lying around. The interior at Monks is industrial but cozy. The owner happened to be Australian and very friendly and the coffee was really good so go visit if you’re in the neighbourhood! (Bilderdijkstraat 46)cart-monks-coffee-roasters

September In Photos

A collection of photo’s that I posted on my Instagram in September:
carrotcake-at-berryOn the first Saturday of September we went to Amsterdam and had coffee and carrot cake at Berry. Secretly wanted to steal that plate!pilea-from-wildernisThat same Saturday I also finally found a Pilea peperomioides at my favourite place to shop for plants: Wildernis. It grows really fast so I’m probably able to take some cuttings from it next week (and start my new pilea family).livingstone-coffee-amersfoortamersfoortRene works from home 1 day every week so instead of working from home we went to Amersfoort. We worked at Livingstone Coffee, a lovely small coffee place in the heart of the city center. It was very quiet and relaxed (a very nice change compared to Amsterdam or Utrecht) and we both got a lot of work done.mornings-in-bedAt this time of the year, I love to have coffee or tea in bed in the mornings. On bright days the sun enters our bedroom in the morning and I love to wake up to the warm sunlight.fig-seasonFig season started this month and they are my favourite breakfast compared with yoghurt and honey roasted granola.living-room-lightIn the afternoon the sunlight hits our living room and it always amazes me how fast the light changes in September. It’s getting much sharper and I really love it.rozet-arnhemTalking about sharp light. I took this photo when we went to Arnhem to visit my sister. These are the stairs of Rozet, the big library in Arnhem. I used to live in Arnhem (from 2007 till 2010) and I was amazed by how much has changed.

Monday morning tunes

A new week, a new song. There are so many good new albums coming out lately. Some of my favourite new ones are from Moddi, Keaton Henson, Local Natives and James Vincent McMorrow. I’m also really looking forward to the new album of Bon Iver, so far I really love the two new singles they recently released.

I have been listening a lot to this new song released by Local Natives last week. Such a good tune to listen to when you go for a long walk, bike ride or run.

It’s Friday!

I’m so happy it’s Friday and that the weekend is about to start. This week I felt quite uninspired and tired, I had to really push myself to get any work done. Maybe it’s because the change of the seasons? I’m looking forward to a busy weekend enjoying the early Autumn days together with family and friends. I can’t wait to go to the French bakery tomorrow morning to get some freshly baked croissants, my favourite Saturday tradition. What are your plans?

Here’s some weekend inspiration from my Pinterest.

Monday morning tunes

Since March 2015 I’ve been keeping a weekly jams playlist on Spotify to which I add new tracks every week. To accompany this playlist I would love to share some of my favorite songs on the blog every Monday morning.

This week I would like to share this song by Yuck, an English band that I discovered recently thanks to my personal discover weekly on Spotify. I’ve listened to this song a lot for the last couple of days because it’s so calm and has that happy vibe all over it. It’s the perfect song to listen to in the morning while you sip your coffee and daydream a little.

ps: If you would like to listen or subscribe to my weekly jams playlist you can find it here

Sunday with scones and a forest walk

This morning we decided to make some scones, normal ones for Rene and with blueberries for me.sunday-breakfastscone-with-strawberry-jamThey were so delicious! Especially with some strawberry jam on top.

After our late breakfast we went out for a long walk. The heather is still blooming a little bit.walk-2walk-4

Living so close to the forest has been one of my favorite things about moving to Hilversum. Nothing calms me more than a walk in the forest. I really can’t wait for Autumn with it’s spectaculair colours and chilly temperatures.

♥ Hope you had a lovely Sunday as well ♥

A hot Wednesday Morning

With temperatures above the 30 degrees Celcius you could say the weather is pretty extraordinary for September. This week started slowly for me as I was being quite sick last Sunday. Yesterday my parents and my grandma visited us and we had a bbq on our rooftop terrace. It was so nice to be together and to show my grandma our new home. We appreciate these days together so much more since we don’t live really close to each other. Today I’m slowly cleaning up the house a little bit and trying to stay cool. This morning I enjoyed a piece of lemon/vanilla cake that I baked and topped it with jam and strawberries, so good!

I’ve been reading a lot of books again and just started reading Just Kids by Patti Smith. It has been on my ‘to read’ list for quite a while and finally bought it earlier this week.

Things I like lately

Processed with VSCO with a4 preset

While I’m settling down in our new apartment I finally find the time again to appreciate the little things:

  • All the new plant babies in our new home (makes me a very happy plant mom)
  • Eating all the summer fruits; strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, grapes and watermelon
  • The new Radiohead album! Hoping it will be available on Spotify soon
  • Season 6 of Game Of Thrones- such a good start of the season, could be my favorite so far! Also love the new episodes of Orphan Black on Netflix
  • Coffee beans from Sweet Cup in Amsterdam (with notes of chocolate, sweet citrus and spices)
  • Walks in the forest (and the fact that the forest is now at the end of my street)
  • Reading on the couch in the evenings. I’m reading Will Grayson, Will Grayson by John Green and made a quick start in Go Set A Watchman by Harper Lee
  • The concert of Andrew Bird I went to in Paradiso, Amsterdam
  • Finding the perfect striped dressIMG_2810

April In Photos

flower confetti in the streetsWhile I’m writing this blogpost I just realised this will be my first blogpost (a little bit later than expected) from my new apartment! It has been total chaos in my mind for the past weeks but I’m so happy with our new apartment (more about that later).

Early in April we unexpectedly found a new apartment and we would get the keys at the end of the month(!). Between all the stress of moving and packing April was quite a good month though.

bike in Amsterdam

When I was wandering the streets in Amsterdam I came across this cute bike and decided to take a snap. Only then I discovered the string of little flags behing the window. Oh, how things like that can make me smile!
breakfast at NativeInterior at Native

On a early Sunday morning we decided to have breakfast at Native in Haarlem (I already miss this place..)

This is one of my favorite views in Amsterdam. Especially on grey days it looks so charming.
banana bread at MicaPoffertjesOn the 27th of April we celebrate King’s Day in the Netherlands. Every year we eat poffertjes to celebrate which are these mini pancakes and they taste so good!
