Weekend Scenes

Weekends are for fuelling up, this was one of those weekends. We went to the saturday market to buy some local fruits and vegetables and made a smoothie. Saturday evening was spent at Bar Wolkers where we had organised an evening filled with live music. Sunday was a relaxing day spent drinking coffee, a walk in the forest and watching movies.

Today is an extra weekend day because we celebrate our freedom in the Netherlands, we did this ever since the Second World War ended. There are a lot of free festivals everywhere and the sun is out so I had a great time at the festival here in Haarlem. I think after these 3 days that I’m ready to start working again tomorrow!

How was your weekend?

Goodbye April, Hello May

April was quite a productive month. I’ve done a lot of designing this month and am about to open up my Etsy shop (probably next week). I have been stuck in a designers block these first months of the year. I am very happy I can finally do some decent designing again. I will show show you some of my work as soon as my shop opens.

April was also a month full of chocolate (oh Easter!) and a lot of running and cycling to stay healthy. Here are some of my favorite moments of April:

bleijBleij Rotterdam

The first weekend of april was spent in Rotterdam for Motel Mozaique, a festival with lots of good music, art and theatre. Our favorites were Ásgeir, Matthew & The Atlas, Kurt Vile, Angel Olsen, Moddi and Erlend Øye. We also visited a lot of great places like Bleij above, they have the most delicious icecream and pizza’s. Love the colours they used in their interior.

RotterdamErasmusbrug rotterdamThe Erasmus bridge in Rotterdam and a posing seagull.

bageltimelunchtimefluffy pancakesA lot of time was spend at the table enjoying breakfast, lunch and dinners. I love to sit at the table and talk, read and draw for hours in the weekends. I also folded my first paper crane and it turned out pretty nice (beyond my own expectation).

easter breakfastWe had two big Easter brunches, one was with my parents, with way too much food.

grandma's poffertjesLast saturday we celebrated the first Kingsday in the Netherlands. We had a ritual at Queensday to eat Grandma’s poffertjes (they are like tiny pancakes and very Dutch) so we continued with this ritual on this first Kingsday.

We found this old Atak Inka at an antique market and fell in love with it. We took it home and we’ll take it with us soon on a small holiday trip to a yet unknown place.

Happy Easter

I am a profound lover of having breakfast in the morning, that’s also one of the reasons I love Easter so much. My parents came over this year for a big Easter brunch at our place. We enjoyed some croissants, bagels, fluffy pancakes with maple syrup, fresh strawberries, eggs, a suger loaf and of course some chocolate. We were absolutely stuffed after all the food but we burned it all down with a lovely walk in the woods afterwards.  DSC00002DSC00004DSC00014DSC00012DSC00010DSC00008DSC00013

Goodbye March, Hello April

Haven

This March was one of the best months ever. We got so many early spring days which made me insanely happy.

Here are some of my favorite moments taken with Instagram in March

Have a good weekend

The weather will be great this weekend so I will spend most of my time outside, soaking up all the sunlight. What are your plans for this weekend?

Hope you all have a good start of the weekend, enjoy every minute of it!

My love for maps

DSC00030

If I should tell you one thing about me, you should know that I love traveling the world. Seeing new places, getting to know new cultures and meet interesting people, I simply can’t get enough of it. There are so many beautiful places I would like to visit one day that I often daydream about it (drooling at pictures on Pinterest as well). As a profound lover of travel I’m always on the look-out for some pretty looking maps. This week my eye fell on several foldout maps of big cities. These maps are foldout guides made by different designers from all over the world for Herb Lester. For example there are maps of Copenhagen, Berlin, London and New York. Have a look at Herb Lester for the complete collection.

In december ’12/january ’13 I was in New York. The first 10 days of the trip were spend in Park Slope, a great neighbourhood in Brooklyn which happens to be full of hipsters. It was there and then that I started to develop a deep love for Brooklyn. When I saw the Herb Lester fold out map of Brooklyn, designed by the New York based Two Arms Inc., I knew that was the one that I had to bring home.

Weekend Scenes

Saturday I’ve done completely nothing! I wasn’t lazy though but I just spend the day reading the Book Thief, working on a new sketch of a bearded man and just enjoying a day of rest. Most of the weekends are filled with all kinds of fun stuff and I really enjoy those things but sometimes when the weekend is over, I have the feeling that time totally passed me by. Staying inside this saturday has been a good choice and it felt refreshing, like my battery is recharged.

saturday

Yesterday Rene and I went to Amsterdam to visit the Neighbour Food Market (remember this post from last month?). The theme was Le Jardin, which means the garden in French. The market was held at an other location at the Westergasfabriek as the last time. Besides food there were a lot of stands that sold products for the garden; from books to plants to seeds. We didn’t like the location as much as the other one, it was quite small and there were too many people so I didn’t get a chance to take some nice photo’s like last time. We do enjoyed a nice piece of lemon cheesecake and after that a slice of a Portugese vegan quiche.

After we had some food we went to the Espressofabriek (Gosschalklaan 7) for a cup of coffee. Their cups are so lovely!

coffee espressofabriekWe did some shopping on the Haarlemmerdijk and the Haarlemmerstraat. Finally visited Concrete Matter (Haarlemmerdijk 127), a gift shop for men where I fell in love with this deer.

concrete matterWhen we were back in Haarlem we treated ourselves to some ice cream at tante Saar (Spaarne 42). It actually was my first ice cream of 2014! Can’t believe it has been such a long time since I ate ice cream.. especially since I’m quite of an addict. I even ate strawberry ice cream for breakfast last summer.

How did you spend your weekend?

A Pretty Little Thing Called Life

DSC00021Today is another pretty, feels-like-summer day containing lots of sunlight and deep blue skies. The garden is coming to life and reveals her prettiness, like the flowers above. Can’t be too long before these daffodils (under) will bloom.

Inside this pretty azalea that I got from my mom is showing off her pretty pink flowers:

DSC00028I had a lovely lunch today featuring bread with some homemade avocado spread, boiled eggs and green onions. Delicious! This weekend I started reading the Book Thief, I want to read it before I’m going to see the movie later this month. I heard a lot of good things about the book on Instagram today so I can’t wait to start reading again later today.

Weekend scenes

We asked for an early spring but we got an early summer weekend instead! Saturday was the warmest 8 March ever in the Netherlands! Today was even warmer, the temperature climbed to 20 degrees today. If someone had told me last weekend that I would take a barefoot walk on the beach this weekend I would’ve said that they were completely insane. I wore my summer blouse at the beach (no sleeves!). Wow, I’m still amazed how you can go from wearing a sweater, wintercoat and scarf to this amazing beach weather.
beard doodlemarket groceries

Saturday started with breakfast and this hairy beard man doodle. We had our garden doors open for the first time. After breakfast we went to the saturday market to do some groceries. We worked in the garden for the rest of the afternoon (it needs some serious work!) We had a lovely dinner using some of the groceries from the market and enjoyed some beers. The rest of the evening Rene played a game while I read a book on the couch.

This morning I read the wonderful weekend issue of Kinfolk in bed while looking at Rene, who was still asleep. We had a bowl of Honey Loops for breakfast and made ourselves some yummy sandwiches for the bike ride we’ve planned. We had a nice bike ride of 40 km in the dunes and stopped at the beach of Noordwijkerhout. We ate our sandwiches while we sat at the beach and enjoyed the warm sun rays.

Good things from last week

I haven’t been very active on the web last week. Monday and tuesday were spent in bed suffering from the flu and wednesday and thursday I was working in Amsterdam. After the flu I  was very lucky to catch a cold (sore throat) which is still bothering me. But there were also some good things happening last week. Here’s a short summary of the good things:
kinfolk

  • I received my very first issue of Kinfolk (hooked!)
  • Rene and I went to see the movie ‘Parkland’ about the murder of President J.F. Kennedy
  • We went to Paradiso to see Wakey!Wakey! play and on friday the performance of our friends from Southern Sunrise at De Stemming
  • We finished watching season 2 of House of Cards (quite a season!)

chika

This weekend my parents visited us, they hadn’t been to the apartment since we moved here the first of December(they live way up in the north of the Netherlands). While they spent the night at a hotel in Haarlem, this little lady above stayed the night with us. On saturday we showed my parents around in the city center of Haarlem and made them some nice pasto pesto rosso. My mom got me a new plant from the saturday market. On sunday morning we went out for an early morning walk  in the park with Chika.

chika2chika3In the afternoon my parents joined us for a beach walk at Bloemendaal. It was a great sunny day which reminded us that spring is just around the corner. Chika went crazy at the beach, she loves digging, running and playing around in the water.
