Sunday with scones and a forest walk

This morning we decided to make some scones, normal ones for Rene and with blueberries for me.sunday-breakfastscone-with-strawberry-jamThey were so delicious! Especially with some strawberry jam on top.

After our late breakfast we went out for a long walk. The heather is still blooming a little bit.walk-2walk-4

Living so close to the forest has been one of my favorite things about moving to Hilversum. Nothing calms me more than a walk in the forest. I really can’t wait for Autumn with it’s spectaculair colours and chilly temperatures.

♥ Hope you had a lovely Sunday as well ♥

A hot Wednesday Morning

With temperatures above the 30 degrees Celcius you could say the weather is pretty extraordinary for September. This week started slowly for me as I was being quite sick last Sunday. Yesterday my parents and my grandma visited us and we had a bbq on our rooftop terrace. It was so nice to be together and to show my grandma our new home. We appreciate these days together so much more since we don’t live really close to each other. Today I’m slowly cleaning up the house a little bit and trying to stay cool. This morning I enjoyed a piece of lemon/vanilla cake that I baked and topped it with jam and strawberries, so good!

I’ve been reading a lot of books again and just started reading Just Kids by Patti Smith. It has been on my ‘to read’ list for quite a while and finally bought it earlier this week.

November walk

Processed with VSCOcam with a6 presetI love to go for walks these past few weeks. Whenever the weather seems okay I’m going out for a long walk and to get a coffee. I’ve always loved going for walks but ever since I’m not living with my parents and our dog anymore I just don’t go that often. During these past few weeks I discovered how happy long walks make me and that it’s doing wonders for my productivity. Working from home every day can be hard sometimes and I often feel uninspired. Walks help me clear my mind and I get inspired by looking at the life around me. I now try to go for a walk (for at least an hour) almost every day. Today I combined my walk with running some errands and took some photos along the way.

Really love this quarter of Haarlem, it’s called the Vijfhoek and has the cutest little alleyways. I went to Brandmeester’s for a coffee and drank it outside (oh yeah November!).

Christmas celebrations #1

Christmas DinnerI hope you all had a lovely Christmas! Mine was filled with the celebration of my 27th birthday and the celebration of Christmas with the family. I have spend the last 1,5 week preparing our Christmas dinner. We bought some new dishes, new candle holders and I designed a menu card for the 3 course dinner we’ve planned. For starters we had carpaccio on a sourdough crouton. The main course included a delicious roasted ham in honey mustard and thyme dressing, cooked pears (in red wine with cinnamon), collared beef, sweet potato wedges, snap beens with smoked bacon and sweet carrot in honey. For dessert we had homemade tiramisu with disaronno. The dinner was a big succes and it made me so happy to see everyone enjoying the food and each other’s company.

We made this dinner two times. At December 25th my family sat at our dinner table and at December 26th my family-in-law enjoyed our Christmas menu. Sweet memories!Aan tafel Aan tafel 2

Christmas is just around the corner

wrapping christmas presentsOnly 2 days left till Christmas.. I’m so excited! Christmas is extra special for me because it’s also my birthday. I’m turning 27 this thursday and it makes me feel a little old for the very first time. It made wonder if I’m getting the most out of my life so far. Although I’m not totally sure about that, I think 2014 has been such a major improvement for me in comparison to 2013. I decided to take my own path in life, doing what I love most. Although people around me do not always understand the choices I make – they have been supporting. I think I’m slowly start to care less about what others want from me and more about what I want in life. That must be one of the best things about growing older – deciding it’s your life and you’re free to live it your way whether people like it or not.

One of the things I love most about Christmas is wrapping the presents! I like to give beautiful wrapped gifts to the people I love. I chose a simple but elegant wrapping with kraft paper and bakers twine in black + red. I gathered up some branches in the forest to decorate the presents. I’m pretty happy with the results. I still have a lot of wrapping to do though.

I  want to wish you all a very merry Christmas!

Goodbye November, Hello December

The days have been grey and cold in November. Last winter we haven’t had any really cold days but this year it’s going to be different I guess. I bought a new coat which is way warmer than my old one and it turned out te be a good choice. I am not a real fan of winter, I don’t like the dark days and I hate the cold. However I love to wear warm knitted sweaters, drinking hot chocolate under a blanket and I love snow! I really hope we will get a white Christmas this year. I am pretty excited for December, we will be going to Berlin, my birthday is on the 25th of december and we will celebrate Christmas with our parents at our place.

In november I’ve spend a lot of time in Amsterdam, exploring new streets and new coffee spots. Here are some of my favorite moments:

BoterhamBoterham 2

In early November we visited this great spot for lunch called BOTERHAM (Dutch for sandwich). They have a great interior with lots of wood and they sell pretty things for your home like planters, lamps and prints. We’ve had some coffee and a piece of their red velvet cake, which is my new favorite cake!KeizersgrachtI will miss these green leaves – they are slowly fading away.Anna + Nina Anna + Nina 2These photo’s were taken at Anna + Nina in de Pijp. They have an amazing shop, look at that wallpaper! It’s the kind of shop where you simply want to buy everything.BlauwburgwalScandinavian EmbassyI went to the Scandinavian Embassy to try their coffee. Some people described it as the best coffee of Amsterdam and it sure was. The place is owned by Swedes and it’s a perfect place for fika and to try Scandinavian treats like kanelbullar.Rainy AmsterdamThere were also some rainy days but Amsterdam still looked pretty.Vintage Bike + Wooden DoorMogadorMy favorite coffee place in Haarlem, Mogador, opened up a second location just around the corner. It’s a beautiful place and I love their interior, especially the tables!Sunny Amsterdam Chika in the ForestThis girl called Chika, came to stay over for a couple of days. We went for long walks together in the forest and she woke us up in the morning. She doesn’t like pictures though but I got lucky shooting this one.

Goodbye September, Hello October

September ended with me being sick. It started with some bad stomach aches and ended with a high fever and terrible head aches. Now I’m still suffering from a soar throat which is leading to sleepless nights. But I guess I’ve had it all after this.. Hopefully this also means I will stay healthy till at least next autumn! While being sick October started so here are a few favorite shots from September.

OuderwetsSuch a cute place for breakfast – I love the blue checkered tablecloths. They serve some excellent sandwiches and soups.

De oude Pijpovergrown

Pretty facades. I love overgrown houses so much!Portraitburger nightHomemade burger nights are my favorite. This month I made some very delicious chicken avocado burgers with sweet potato parts.

I hope I will get rid of my soar throat soon so for now I will be drinking litres of tea until it’s gone. Have a good start of October you-all!

Some afternoon delights

• Reading: the new Kinfolk volume 13
• Drinking: a cup of freshly pressed coffee
Eating: peanut butter cookies which are hard to set aside
• Listening:  to the Seven Swans album by Sufjan Stevens (this song in particular!)
Dreaming: about travels to Scandinavia and Iceland
Feeling: cold and tired (pulled my winter sweaters out of the closet today)
Wishing:  this would be a more productive week

At the seaside

Yesterday we took the train to Beverwijk and a bus to Wijk aan Zee. My parents gave us a voucher for a hotel so we booked a room at a hotel next to the beach. The weather was perfect – deep blue skies and some small clouds. The hotel has a great location in the dunes so it is only a couple of metres away from the beach. I love going to beach – the waves that come rolling in, feeling the sand between my toes, the salty clean air, the shrieky sounds of the seagulls and finding treasures like feathers and shells. We sat on the beach and watched a beautiful sunset. This morning we enjoyed a big breakfast buffet so I think I will skip lunch today. Now it’s back to work. I hope you all have a great week!

Weekend Scenes

Some scenes from this weekend.

We found this blue car in one of the streets in the city center. This is exactly the reason why I love blue cars so much. I hope to drive around in a car like this one day!breakfast in bed

It’s been a while since Rene and I enjoyed breakfast in bed so we decided to start our sunday like this.klavertje vijf

This is my favorite flowershop in Haarlem. Their storefront is continually changing and they have by far the best choice in flowers and plants.Sunlight VijfhoekEarly morning walks are my favorite – the light and shadows are always stunning and everything looks so calm.
